ZeroNorth has partnered with major shipping owners to launch AI agents that automate vessel operations, starting with a voyage optimisation agent designed to reduce fuel consumption and improve operational efficiency. The agents aim to give operators real-time recommendations on speed, routing, and engine settings.
Voyage optimisation agent
The initial AI agent focuses on voyage optimisation, a core lever for cutting fuel costs and emissions. ZeroNorth's software ingests data on weather, currents, and vessel performance to suggest adjustments that can save fuel without sacrificing schedule reliability. The company says the agent works autonomously once given high-level voyage parameters, freeing operations teams from routine manual calculations.
The technology is part of a broader push toward AI Agents & Automation in capital-intensive industries where small efficiency gains translate into significant cost savings. For shipping lines, fuel is the largest single expense, and even a 1% reduction can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars annually per vessel.
Partnership with major owners
ZeroNorth did not name the owners involved, but described them as "major" players in the bulk and tanker segments. Soren Andersen, the company's chief executive, said the partnerships were built on shared goals of cutting operational costs and meeting tightening environmental regulations. The agents are being rolled out in phases, with additional features for cargo planning and port call optimization expected later this year.
