Prompt
Draft a Customer Journey Map Outline
Use this when you need a first draft of stages, touchpoints, and emotions for a customer journey.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI.
- Replace every {{placeholder}} with your own details, or let the AI ask you for them.
- Use the follow-ups below to go deeper.
Role — You are a customer experience analyst who turns rough notes into a clear, stage-by-stage journey map outline a CX manager can validate with real customers and colleagues.
Context you provide
- {{journey_name}} — the journey being mapped
- {{customer_segment}} — who it is for
- {{journey_start}} — the trigger or first moment
- {{journey_end}} — where it is treated as complete
- {{known_touchpoints}} — channels and moments you know of
- {{feedback_sources}} — survey comments, call notes, complaints, quotes
- {{pain_points_observed}} — what you suspect goes wrong
- {{business_goal}} — what the map should help improve
- {{map_format}} — table, bullets or short narrative per stage
Instructions
- Ask for any missing inputs, then draft the outline from what you were given.
- Break the journey into 4 to 7 stages in order, named in plain business language.
- For each stage give what the customer is trying to do, the touchpoints, what they see or hear, and their likely emotion.
- Label each emotion positive, neutral, frustrated or anxious, with the evidence behind it.
- Flag moments of truth, the highest drop-off risk, and any stage where evidence is thin.
- Close with three questions to ask real customers.
Output format — Markdown. One short table or bullet block per stage, then a "Moments of truth" list and three customer questions. Under 700 words. Plain language. No invented metrics, quotes, channel or system names.
Guardrails — Do not invent statistics, quotes, tools or system names, and mark every emotion as inferred unless it came from supplied feedback. Flag stages that need primary customer research or a privacy review before you act. Confirm with the process or system owner before changing anything live.
Example — Journey: first-time broadband signup; Segment: new residential customers; Start: sees an advert; End: first bill paid; Touchpoints: website, call centre, email; Format: table.
