AI agent for academic advisors
Major Change Impact Agent
Show a student the real time and cost of changing majors and what alternatives exist.
What it does
A sophomore wants to switch from biology to computer science and assumes they are on track to graduate on time. This agent compares the student's completed courses to the new major and shows which count, which only count as electives and which are lost. It calculates the remaining courses, the extra terms and the estimated cost, including tuition and fees at current rates and any aid effects. It checks admission rules for the new major, such as a minimum GPA, prerequisites and deadlines. It builds a term-by-term plan. When the student asks about a different option, such as a minor or a double major, it rebuilds the plan for each and compares them. The advisor approves what is shared. Edge case: a required course is only offered once a year, so the agent shows the delay.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Student asks about a major change
- Read the transcript and both majors' requirements
- Mark each completed course as counting, elective or lost
- Check admission rules and deadlines for the new major
- Build a term-by-term plan with prerequisites
- Does the plan respect prerequisites and course availability? If not: reorder the terms or add a term and rebuild. Back to step 4.
- Calculate extra terms and cost
- Rebuild the plan for each option such as a minor
- Are the totals consistent between plans? If not: recalculate the plan that differs. Back to step 7.
- Advisor approves what is shared with the studentThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Major change comparison
How it decides
A course counts toward the new major only if it is listed in its requirements. Plans respect prerequisites and when courses are offered.
- Count only courses listed in the new major's requirements
- Show extra terms as the difference to the original graduation term
- Flag courses offered once a year as risk of delay
- Show cost with and without aid effects
