AI agent for venture capitalists
Quarterly Valuation Mark Support Agent
A supported mark for each holding with method, evidence and a policy check, ready for the committee
What it does
Every quarter the valuation committee asks why a company is marked up or down, and the evidence sits in several places. For each holding, this agent gathers the latest round terms, comparable company multiples and recent changes in company KPIs. It proposes a mark with the method used, such as the last round price, a calibrated multiple or a milestone adjustment, and writes down why. It checks the proposed mark against the fund's valuation policy, including the age of the last round and the rules for stale evidence. If evidence is out of date or conflicts, it requests data from the company or the deal team and recalculates. It leaves the final marks to the valuation committee. Edge case: a holding whose last round is 16 months old is not held at cost automatically and is sent for a method review.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Quarter closes
- List holdings and their latest round terms
- Pull comparable multiples and recent KPI changes
- Select the valuation method for each holding
- Propose a mark and write the support
- Is the evidence recent enough and consistent with policy? If not: request updated data from the company or deal team and select the method again. Back to step 2.
- Compare each new mark with the prior mark and explain moves over a set size
- Is every move above the threshold explained by evidence? If not: recalculate with other evidence or flag the mark for committee discussion. Back to step 4.
- Assemble the committee pack
- Valuation committee approves final marksThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Approved marks and support file
How it decides
The method follows the policy: a recent round supports the round price, an older round needs a calibrated adjustment. A mark moves only when evidence supports it.
- Treat a round older than 12 months as stale and recalibrate
- Explain any move greater than 15% from the prior mark
- Use the last round price only if the round was arm's length and no later negative news exists
- Flag any holding with no recent data for committee review
