What it does

Skills such as a surgical airway or chest decompression may be needed once a year, so they fade. This agent reads each paramedic's call history and training record and finds skills not used within a set period. It builds short practice scenarios for those skills using equipment the station has, and proposes a schedule. After each practice it records the result, such as time to complete, steps missed and instructor notes. If a result is weak, it adds a repeat sooner and adjusts the scenario. If a paramedic does well twice, it stretches the interval. The training officer approves the plan and any change. Edge case: a paramedic has been off for six weeks, so the agent adds a refresher block before normal practice.

How it decides

A skill is due when not used on a call or in practice for its currency period. Weak results shorten the next interval.

  • Treat a skill as due after its currency period passes without use
  • Repeat within 14 days after a weak result
  • Double the interval after two strong results
  • Add a refresher block after an absence of 4 weeks or more
