8am adds OCR and AI search to its legal platform

Legal professionals spend 50+ hours monthly on manual document searches. 8am's new OCR and AI assistant turn messages, scans, and financials into searchable insights.

8am has added image-to-text OCR and an expanded AI assistant to its 8am IQ platform, aiming to solve the fragmented data problem that forces legal professionals to spend more than 50 hours each month manually searching for documents. The new capabilities, Discovery Assistant and an enhanced Case Assistant, are designed to surface critical case information from messages, scanned files, and financial records without pulling users out of their existing workflows.

Research shows the burden of manual document review is substantial, with legal professionals spending over 50 hours per month on these tasks. While 61 percent of legal professionals using AI report saving multiple hours per week, the technology only delivers when it is grounded in a firm's own data and built for the realities of legal work.

"Legal professionals don't need AI that forces them to work differently. They need AI that fits naturally into the way their work already happens and reduces the burden of manual, time-intensive tasks," said Leslie Witt, Chief Product Officer, 8am. The move reflects a broader trend in AI for Legal, where tools are being designed to integrate with existing workflows rather than demanding new habits.

Discovery Assistant turns scanned documents into searchable text

More than a third of documents uploaded to MyCase are image-based files or scanned PDFs, leaving a significant portion of case data invisible to search and AI analysis. Discovery Assistant embeds image-to-text OCR directly into MyCase, automatically converting these documents into machine-readable text the moment they are uploaded. This eliminates the need for third-party OCR tools and keeps all case data inside the platform.

By making every document searchable, Discovery Assistant improves the completeness of search results and feeds sharper insights into Case Assistant. The foundation it creates also paves the way for more context-aware automation in future updates.

Case Assistant connects case details across documents, messages, and financials

With the expanded data access from Discovery Assistant, Case Assistant now draws insights from document text and images, client communications, and-in the coming weeks-financial records. Legal professionals can ask the AI assistant any question about a case and receive an answer pulled from the latest client conversation, an unpaid invoice, or a detail buried in a scanned handwritten letter.

A new prompt library provides ready-to-use queries that deliver consistent responses, helping teams move faster on routine tasks. By tying together the business and practice sides of legal work, Case Assistant gives professionals quicker access to the information they need to make decisions.

The combination of OCR and cross-matter AI search directly targets the 50-plus hours per month that many legal professionals lose to manual document review. Instead of spending time hunting for a scanned medical record or a client's payment status, lawyers can retrieve that information with a natural-language query. This shifts time from administrative triage to higher-value work like case strategy and client engagement. For firms that have hesitated to adopt AI because of concerns about data fragmentation or usability, the MyCase-integrated tools provide a way to turn invisible documents into actionable data without disrupting daily routines.
