AI-referred shoppers now convert at higher rates than other retail visitors

US retail website traffic from AI assistants jumped 138% year-on-year in May 2026. These visitors converted at a 54% higher rate than those from other sources.

US retailers saw a 138% year-on-year jump in website traffic from AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini in May 2026, according to Adobe Analytics. Visitors arriving via AI also converted at a 54% higher rate and generated 53% more revenue per visit than those from other sources, making AI referral quality a critical new metric for marketing teams.

Adobe's data covers shoppers who clicked through from AI platforms to retail sites. AI-referred visitors spent 53% more time on site, viewed 23% more pages, and were 36% less likely to leave immediately. The conversion advantage reversed sharply from a year earlier, when AI-referred traffic converted at almost half the rate of non-AI visitors.

Shopify confirms rising AI-driven conversions

Shopify has also reported higher conversion rates from AI-referred shoppers, with conversion nearly 50% higher than organic search visitors and average order values 14% higher. More than half of AI-referred sessions started on product detail pages, compared with about 20% for organic search.

The trend accelerated throughout 2025. By late that year, Shopify told TechCrunch that AI-driven traffic to its merchants' online stores had risen sevenfold since January, while orders from AI-powered search increased elevenfold.

AI assistants add shopping muscle

Platforms themselves are deepening their retail capabilities. OpenAI added shopping features to ChatGPT Search in 2025, including product recommendations with images, reviews, prices, and direct purchase links. Reuters reported that the recommendations were not ads and not commission-based.

Google launched its Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026, supporting checkout from eligible product listings in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. The protocol is described as an open standard for purchases through AI tools.

Machine readability becomes the new battleground

As AI-driven traffic grows, retailers face a practical challenge: making their websites readable to AI systems. Adobe's earlier benchmark found that product pages averaged just a 66% machine-readability score, compared with 75% for homepages and 74% for category-level pages.

Vivek Pandya, director of digital insights at Adobe, said retailers whose products appear in AI-generated suggestions can "drive more personalisation" when shoppers continue their journey on the retailer's own website. Marketing teams now need to grasp how AI models read and surface product information. AI for Marketing - Courses & Training can help build those skills.

Beyond retail: travel and finance

Adobe also reported AI referral growth outside retail. AI-driven visits to travel and financial services sites rose year on year in May, with those visitors spending more time on site than visitors from other sources.

Why this matters for marketing

AI-referred traffic is no longer a rounding error. With conversion rates 54% higher and revenue per visit up 53%, marketing teams that ignore AI search as a channel risk ceding high-intent shoppers to competitors. The immediate steps are clear: audit product pages for machine readability-Adobe's benchmark puts product pages at only 66%-and track AI-driven sessions separately in analytics to capture the full picture of performance.
