Airbnb Expands Beyond Lodging With Airport Pickups, Hotels, and AI Assistant
Airbnb announced a suite of new features Wednesday designed to let users book an entire trip on a single platform. The company now offers airport transfers, car rentals, luggage storage, grocery delivery, boutique hotel rooms, and an AI assistant-moving far beyond its original vacation rental model.
The expansion reflects user demand. More travelers want to handle multiple trip logistics through one app rather than juggling separate bookings for rides, hotels, and services.
What's New
- Redesigned homepage
- Airport pickup and car rental options
- Luggage storage booking
- Grocery delivery
- Boutique and independent hotel rooms
- AI assistant for trip planning
- Social features to share itineraries with friends and family
- Travel map showing nearby points of interest (launching later this year)
Jud Coplan, Airbnb's VP of product marketing, said the company built these additions based on what hosts and travelers were already asking for. "The things we offer, we have a very unique perspective on them, in that they're provided by people, by hosts, and you can't get the same experience anywhere else," Coplan said.
The shift marks a notable turn for a company founded on offering alternatives to traditional hotels. Airbnb now includes boutique and independent hotels directly on its platform.
This expansion accelerated last year when Airbnb introduced Services and Experiences. The company is pushing further in 2024 with the goal of making trip planning and inspiration easier for users.
