Natalya Pasklinsky, assistant dean at Columbia, attributes part of the appeal to nursing's resistance to automation. "I don't think that AI can pick up on the minute nuances that may happen in human emotion… that one-on-one empathy," she said.
An aging population is driving demand. Median nursing wages exceed many other occupations, and the field offers clear pathways for advancement and specialization.
Dasha Efremov, a bedside nurse pursuing a nurse practitioner credential, cited flexibility as a key factor. "I wanted to be able to pivot at any point," she said. "You don't have to be married to the exact specialty that you start off in." As a nurse practitioner, she will gain the ability to diagnose patients and prescribe treatments.
The work carries real costs. Long hours, physical strain, and emotional stress are routine. Staffing shortages have prompted labor actions, including recent healthcare worker strikes in New York City.
Despite these demands, nurses report the work as deeply rewarding. Patient outcomes justify the exhaustion.
