South Korea adopted a government-wide Basic AI Healthcare Strategy on Thursday, a response to rising healthcare demand as the country transitions to a super-aged society. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the plan in an official statement.
A super-aged society is commonly defined as one where more than 20% of the population is 65 or older. The ministry said the strategy rests on three pillars:
- AI-driven healthcare innovation that people can experience in their daily lives
- Development of a nationwide digital foundation for AI healthcare innovation
- Creation of a sustainable AI healthcare ecosystem
Under those pillars, the government will pursue 12 initiatives. They include introducing remote AI medical services in isolated areas, developing sovereign medical AI models, and establishing a global AI hub.
The strategy is the latest sign that AI for Healthcare has moved from research labs into national policy. It also illustrates a broader trend in AI for Government, where public agencies use algorithms to manage health services and plan for demographic change.
