Dealership Conversions Jump 37% as AI Boosts Digital Ad Efficiency

Dealerships achieved a 37.3% year-over-year conversion increase in April while cutting cost per lead by 14.8%, according to data from Fullpath's Auto Intelligence Index. The improvement signals that AI for marketing is delivering measurable results for automotive retailers.

Cost per lead fell to its lowest point in a year, suggesting dealerships are optimizing ad spend more effectively through automation and real-time budget adjustments.

Where Dealerships Are Spending

Google Search remains the dominant channel, accounting for 64% of total digital ad investment. The platform also delivered the best cost efficiency at $28.50 per lead.

Google's Performance Max campaigns showed the sharpest gains. Conversions more than doubled year over year, rising 119%, while cost per lead dropped more than 33%.

Budget Shifts Reflect Market Realities

Affordability pressures are reshaping where dealerships allocate dollars. Certified pre-owned advertising surged 69% year over year, while fixed operations investment climbed 57.4%.

Used inventory spending rose 27.8%, and "Dealer Near Me" campaigns increased 23.4%. Trade-in campaign spending fell 17% to $207,000, the only major category to decline.

AI Chat Traffic Accelerates Lead Conversion

Dealership traffic from ChatGPT and other AI chatbots jumped 34.5% in March after a brief slowdown in early Q1. ChatGPT still dominates LLM-driven traffic, though Google Gemini's share grew from 1.5% in Q4 2025 to 8.5% by April.

A critical threshold emerged in the data: shoppers who send a sixth message to an AI chatbot see conversion likelihood jump sixfold to 45.6%. This suggests sustained engagement with AI tools correlates directly with purchase intent.

What This Means for Marketers

The data points to two shifts in dealership strategy. First, digital efficiency is improving fastest for dealers using AI-driven tools. Second, smarter budget allocation across higher-performing channels matters as much as larger overall spend.

As consumer behavior evolves-particularly as affordability concerns push buyers toward used and certified inventory-dealers who adjust spending in real time are seeing better returns.
