Footagen.ai launches AI-native film workflow with filmmaker control

Finnish production company Frame Rate Oy has unveiled footagen.ai, an AI-native film workflow that takes productions from screenplay to edit-ready shots while keeping creative decisions in human hands. The platform opens its waitlist on 10 September and debuts at IBC2026 in Amsterdam from 11-14 September.

Generative models can produce impressive individual images and clips. Filmmaking, however, depends on the process between them: maintaining characters, locations, props, visual direction, and creative intent across an entire project. footagen.ai provides the production layer that keeps that process together.

From screenplay to controlled shots

The platform breaks a screenplay into scenes, shots, characters, locations, and props, then carries that structure through planning and node-based AI generation. Users choose the most suitable model shot by shot, approve the creative direction, and retain control over every decision. The workflow tracks generation choices, credit use, and production provenance, giving filmmakers a clear view of both the creative process and its costs.

footagen.ai is built for production companies, studios, broadcasters, and professional content teams, but also gives serious independent and hobbyist filmmakers access to the same structured planning, continuity tools, and production control expected in professional workflows.

"AI should not take the director's chair," said Jukka Karhula, CEO of Frame Rate. "footagen.ai is not built to mass-produce AI slop. It is a storytelling tool for people who want to make intentional images, understand the cost of their choices, and keep control of the whole production."

The platform works above the models themselves, bringing tools including Seedance 2.5, Hailuo H3, Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 2, and Seedream 5 Pro into a consistent workflow. As generative technology changes, the production structure remains intact. For professionals exploring Generative Video workflows, this model-agnostic approach matters: the platform's structure survives model upgrades.

Production data and provenance

footagen.ai is local-first, meaning project files and generated media stay on the user's own device by default. For Cloud Collaboration, Frame Rate aims to keep persistent project data - including scripts, shot plans, assets, metadata, and generated media - in EU-region infrastructure. Generation data is processed by the selected third-party model provider, and depending on the model chosen, that processing can take place outside the EU/EEA.

The platform records the model and provider used for each generated asset and aims to support C2PA Content Credentials for generated exports. Project records preserve production metadata including the model, provider, prompt, references, and timestamps, giving studios and broadcasters a documented account of how generative AI was used in a production. For editors and post-production staff, this traceability aligns with the practical workflows covered in AI for Video Editors training.

Built with filmmakers, priced for access

footagen.ai has been developed and stress-tested primarily within Frame Rate's own production team. External filmmakers and industry experts have contributed feedback across scripting, shot planning, visual development, and generation. Rather than opening a broad public beta, Frame Rate will select the first waitlist users to work closely with the team as the platform moves into external productions.

The platform is priced to be accessible rather than exclusive. Independent filmmakers can work with the same production discipline as professional teams, while shot-level model selection and cost visibility help every user plan where generation credits are spent. Front-loaded planning, references, and continuity decisions reduce avoidable trial and error.

Frame Rate has received support from EIT Culture & Creativity through mentoring, business development, and trade fair participation, and has been selected for its 100-to-Watch list of promising European cultural and creative ventures. The company will present footagen.ai within EIT Culture & Creativity's Future Tech Ignite presence at stand FT1407 during IBC2026.

Why this matters for creatives

The tool's practical appeal for filmmakers is the combination of shot-by-shot model selection and cost visibility. You can choose a cheaper model for coverage shots and spend credits where the visual quality matters most, while the platform keeps characters, locations, and props consistent throughout. For independent filmmakers, that means professional-grade continuity control without a studio budget - the same production discipline used by larger teams, priced for smaller ones.
