German Bar Association Partners with Bryter to Endorse AI Tools for Lawyers

The German Bar Association (DAV) has taken a significant step by partnering exclusively with legaltech firm Bryter. This marks the first time the DAV, representing Germany’s 60,000 lawyers, has officially endorsed AI tools for legal professionals.

Bryter, a leading legaltech company in Germany, serves high-profile clients including DLA Piper, Linklaters, Clifford Chance, and in-house teams at McDonald’s and Deloitte. The partnership aims to broaden the digital resources available to German law firms, emphasizing accessibility, security, and legal relevance.

Through this collaboration, DAV members gain exclusive discounted access to Bryter’s AI productivity suite, Beamon AI. The suite supports tasks such as legal document drafting, contract analysis, research, and producing summaries, helping lawyers save time and improve accuracy.

The DAV has traditionally been cautious about adopting new technology. Bryter views this endorsement as a formal recognition of legal AI’s value beyond early adopters in large firms, signalling a wider acceptance across Europe’s legal market.

Dr. Sylvia Ruge, managing director of the DAV, highlighted that the partnership offers members access to technology that provides practical relief in daily work. The discounted rates cover solo practitioners, small firms, and midsize practices.

Bryter’s tools stand out for their ease of use, requiring no complex implementation. Users can access them via web browsers or an MS Word plugin and customize the suite by integrating their own document templates, clauses, playbooks, and contracts.

AI Adoption in European Law Firms: Current Trends

The DAV-Bryter partnership reflects a broader trend of AI integration in the legal sector. Recent research by GLP and LexisNexis highlights how top European law firms are experimenting with generative AI and learning from early projects.

For example, German firm Hengeler Mueller uses AI for initial document reviews during investigations. Gleiss Lutz employs AI to summarize and compare documents efficiently. Many firms have partnered with AI providers like Harvey, Luminance, and Everlaw to automate routine tasks and boost productivity.

On 5 June, Simmons & Simmons announced a partnership with Berlin-based start-up Flank to develop projects using agentic AI—an advanced AI capable of autonomous actions. This AI can review, draft, edit legal documents, and respond to legal and compliance queries.

Some firms are also building their own AI solutions. Linklaters launched Laila, a generative AI chatbot developed entirely in-house. Others have created AI sandboxes and incubator programs or invested in AI start-ups. For instance, Mishcon de Reya invested in Ctrl AI, an agentic AI start-up focused on in-house team efficiency. Travers Smith spun out its AI products into a separate company, Jylo, earlier this year.
