Globus Medical has acquired Higgs Boson Health, a Durham, North Carolina-based digital healthcare company incubated out of Duke University, adding AI, software development, and digital patient engagement capabilities to its musculoskeletal technology portfolio. The companies did not disclose financial terms.
The acquisition brings Higgs Boson's software developers and AI scientists into Globus Medical, where their work will feed into the company's surgical intelligence pillar. Globus Medical founder and executive chairman David Paul said the technology is central to the company's goal of improving outcomes across spine, orthopedic trauma, joint reconstruction, and biomaterials.
"Higgs Boson employs highly experienced teams of software developers and AI scientists who will be joining our team to power our vision of a digital healthcare environment to simplify a patient's journey through our healthcare system while enhancing real-time information and surgical intelligence available to healthcare providers," Paul said.
Beyond the operating room
Globus Medical plans to apply the acquired technology across the full episode of care, not just during procedures. The company describes a closed-loop system where data captured before, during, and after surgery feeds into analytics that support clinical decision-making. That approach falls under the company's broader strategy of building an integrated technology ecosystem around musculoskeletal care.
For healthcare professionals, the shift means patient information captured pre-surgery could flow directly into post-operative follow-up and outcome tracking. The goal: reduce the friction that currently fragments care across different settings.
President and CEO Keith Pfeil framed the acquisition as part of a longer-term program.
