Google Automates More of the Marketing Process With New AI Max Tools

Google is rolling out new capabilities within AI Max, its creative and targeting tool suite, ahead of its annual Marketing Live event next month. The updates include automatic brief writing, shopping ad optimization, and unified travel campaigns designed to help advertisers operate in a search environment shaped by AI agents and conversational search.

Brendon Kraham, VP of search and commerce global ads solutions at Google, said AI Max is the company's "fastest-growing AI search product." The new tools reflect a shift toward greater automation in campaign management.

AI Brief Handles Campaign Planning

Google is introducing AI Brief, a feature that lets marketers write a single brief describing their creative vision and campaign guardrails instead of manually setting keywords and targeting parameters.

The tool accepts instructions like "don't include pricing information" or "prioritize healthy pantry staples." Marketers can use Matching Guidelines to tell the AI which searches to target and which to avoid. Audience Guidelines help the AI identify and customize ads for specific customer segments.

AI Brief launches in English for AI Max search campaigns first, with plans to expand to other Google offerings like Performance Max.

Shopping and Travel Automation

AI Max for Shopping automates campaign setup using data from Google Merchant Center feeds. The feature automatically customizes ad copy based on search intent, expands final URLs to show the most relevant landing pages, and selects the best ad format for each shopper.

For regulated industries, text disclaimers will appear in ads even when final URL expansion is active, ensuring compliance.

Google is also consolidating travel advertising tools under AI Max. Text ads, travel promotion ads, and booking links now operate together with unified reporting, addressing what Kraham called "a disconnected set of tools."

These updates reflect the broader shift toward AI agents and automation in AI for marketing. Marketers looking to adopt these tools should understand how they integrate with existing campaign workflows.
