Health Care's AI Playbook: Building Safe, Smart and Scalable Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now part of almost every industry, including health care. It helps with tasks like detection, analysis, and reducing physician burnout. Yet, AI can also spread false information and carry biases, which poses risks. As health care systems adopt these technologies, strong leadership and clear policies are essential to protect patient safety.

A live webinar titled "Health Care's AI Playbook: Building Safe, Smart and Scalable Systems" will take place on Tuesday, May 20. Hosted by Newsweek's Healthcare Editor Alexis Kayser, the event brings together AI experts who will discuss best practices for implementing AI, enforcing necessary checks, and building trust with physicians and patients.

"AI provides an opportunity to improve patient outcomes and care delivery," Kayser says. "But it comes with responsibility—especially in health care, where human lives are at stake. Industry-wide conversations about AI governance are critical to ensure safe and fair development."

Meet the Expert Panelists

  • Dr. Andreea Bodnari, Founder/CEO of Alignmt.AI
A scientist with a PhD in Machine Learning from MIT, Bodnari is a serial entrepreneur and former product executive at Google and UnitedHealth Group. She founded Google’s B2B Healthcare AI product department and has been a reviewer for JAMIA for over a decade. She is also involved with CHAI and the NIST AI Safety Consortium.
  • Dr. Danny Tobey, Chair of DLA Piper's AI & Data Analytics Practice
Tobey is a lawyer, software founder, and medical doctor recognized by the United Nations for his insights on AI, law, and ethics. He was named Innovative Lawyer of the Year by the Financial Times and has advised major foundation model makers and Fortune 10 companies on AI risk and business enablement.
  • Dr. Brian Anderson, CEO/Co-Founder of the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI)
Anderson leads efforts to create consensus-driven guidelines for responsible AI in health care and supports independent testing to ensure safety and effectiveness. Previously, he was chief digital health physician at MITRE, working with government partners like the White House COVID Task Force.
  • Dr. Michael Pencina, Vice Dean for Data Science and Chief Data Scientist at Duke Health
Pencina oversees quantitative science strategies at Duke’s School of Medicine and directs Duke AI Health. He is a professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and was formerly Director of Biostatistics at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He highlights the importance of human oversight in AI, comparing AI to small children who need supervision to avoid mistakes.

Previously, Kayser hosted a virtual event on cybersecurity threats to health care systems. Experts from LevelBlue, Kyndryl, and Zoom discussed how AI can be both a tool and a risk factor when exploited by cyber attackers. Trent Sanders, Vice President for U.S. Healthcare at Kyndryl, advised that health care organizations can improve security by removing unnecessary enterprise equipment that could pose threats.

The upcoming AI webinar runs from 2:15 to 3:15 pm EST on May 20. Register here for the live event and join the conversation on safe and scalable AI innovation in health care.
