HHS Drops AI Model Card Requirement From Health IT Certification
HHS removed several health IT certification rules, including a requirement for AI model cards that explain how machine learning tools work.

The Department of Health and Human Services published its HTI-5 final rule, which removes several health IT certification criteria. Among the dropped requirements is a mandate for AI model cards, a form of structured transparency documentation that describes a machine learning model’s characteristics, intended use, and evaluation results.
The rule scales back formal disclosure obligations tied to the certification program. Even with the reduction in regulatory requirements, healthcare vendors continue to face an expectation to maintain credible transparency and validation practices for their products.
