The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will join the White House's Genesis Mission with an AI initiative aimed at accelerating biomedical discoveries and uncovering the root causes of chronic disease. Announced July 22, the effort establishes National Science and Technology Challenges that invite researchers to apply AI and advanced computing to major health problems, with the flagship challenge focused on chronic disease.
A government-wide biomedical AI push
At the center of HHS's participation is the NIH-led Bio Genesis Mission, a program designed to modernize biomedical research and cut in half the time it takes for discoveries to reach patients. The initiative will combine AI, advanced computing, and cross-sector partnerships to analyze large datasets from multiple scientific disciplines. Participating agencies-including the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health-will contribute biomedical, genomic, public health, and safety data.
Researchers will use those resources to detect patterns that were previously invisible, generate new hypotheses, and explore fresh approaches to disease prevention and treatment. HHS said security and privacy protections will govern how researchers access and analyze the information. The Bio Genesis Mission also helps shape the biomedical capabilities of the broader Genesis Mission, which President Donald Trump launched in November 2025 to apply federal scientific data and computing infrastructure to national research priorities.
The initiative reflects a broader federal effort to treat scientific datasets and computing infrastructure as shared foundations for AI research, a trend that aligns with ongoing work in AI for Healthcare and AI for Science & Research.
"Patients living with cancer, chronic disease, and rare conditions cannot afford to wait decades for scientific discoveries to reach them," NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya said. "Through the Bio Genesis Mission, we are harnessing artificial intelligence and advanced computing to help researchers uncover the root causes of disease, accelerate the development of new treatments, and build a biomedical research ecosystem that delivers lifesaving innovations to patients faster, while upholding the rigorous scientific standards and responsible stewardship that earn the public's trust."
Three challenges to accelerate discovery
The initiative will launch three National Science and Technology Challenges:
- Identifying the root causes of chronic disease
- Investigating pediatric cancer
- Using AI to shorten drug-development timelines, identify therapeutic targets, and bring treatments to patients faster
The effort supports the Trump administration's Make America Healthy Again strategy, which has made chronic disease prevention a central health policy objective.
Open source digital health collaboration
In a separate development, the Linux Foundation launched the Open Health Stack Software Foundation earlier this month, backed by Google, the World Health Organization and other contributors. The vendor-neutral, community-governed collaboration aims to advance open source digital health.
