Workplace violence in healthcare facilities has become so prevalent that hospital workers in several states have gone on strike. The systems are trained on many types of weapons, can recognize both open and concealed weapons, and can distinguish between revolvers and shotguns. "You have to start by understanding your existing risks and security gaps," Baratta said. This involves evaluating the number and location of hospital entrances and the times when each entrance is open or closed. Crime statistics for the hospital's area can also clarify the potential risk. Emergency rooms have more exposure and should have more security, such as AI cameras and access control that can prevent unauthorized access. AI weapons detection software needs to align with the hospital's existing security policies and procedures, and staff must be trained on it. Hospitals should have a clear process for what happens when AI detects a weapon: Does the security officer take the weapon and later return it, or instruct the visitor to place it in their car? Any security event should be reported to a hospital's Environment of Care Committee, a multidisciplinary group that reviews the physical environment safety program in line with Joint Commission requirements. State laws vary widely, with some states permitting open carry and others allowing concealed carry, so hospitals should know state and local laws and clearly post their own policies regarding on-premises weapons.

Once IT leaders have buy-in from these stakeholders, Baratta said, "it's easier to bring the solution forward to the capital committee to purchase it."
