Building a Law Firm AI Strategy: A Practical Course for Legal Leaders

The Practising Law Institute (PLI) and the American Arbitration Association® (AAA®) have launched a new course titled Building a Law Firm AI Strategy. This six-module, self-paced program is available at no cost for PLI Privileged Members starting June 17, 2025, and open for enrollment through the AAA for others interested.

Designed specifically for law firm leaders, the course offers clear, actionable guidance on integrating generative AI into legal practice. It draws on AAA’s own AI transformation as a case study, providing a real-world example to help participants develop an effective AI roadmap.

What the Course Covers

  • How to leverage AI tools while maintaining and enhancing human expertise
  • Adapting to changing client expectations related to technology and service delivery
  • Building a culture that supports innovation and smart AI adoption
  • Structuring AI projects and prioritizing use cases that deliver value
  • Positioning AI as a strategic advisor to clients, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Balancing AI adoption with long-term business sustainability
  • Leadership strategies to overcome resistance and manage organizational change

The course emphasizes a practical approach over hype, helping law firm executives make informed decisions that fit their unique operations.

Insights from Leadership

Bridget M. McCormack, president and CEO of the AAA, highlights the need for clear planning in AI adoption: “Law firm leaders don’t need hype — they need a plan. This course provides a clear, practical framework for responsible AI adoption grounded in the realities of law firm operations.” She stresses that effective AI use requires thoughtful decision-making rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Sharon L. Crane, PLI President, notes the strong interest in AI education among legal professionals and the value of sharing AAA’s experience. This course adds to PLI’s extensive library of legal learning resources, helping lawyers stay current with technology trends.
