Indonesia Fast-Tracks National AI Agenda with Inclusive Talent Development and Strategic Collaboration
Indonesia is speeding up its national AI agenda, focusing on healthcare, digital talent, and smart cities. Minister Hafid urges coordinated action to build an inclusive AI ecosystem.

Indonesia Accelerates National AI Agenda
Indonesia is intensifying efforts to strengthen its digital capabilities, with Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasizing the need for swift, coordinated action on the country’s national artificial intelligence (AI) agenda. Speaking at a leadership meeting in Jakarta, she highlighted President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to accelerate AI implementation across government agencies and deliver measurable results.
"The President has once again reminded us that we need to speed up our work," Minister Hafid stated, stressing the importance of aligning digital initiatives with the nation’s development goals.
National AI Roadmap in Focus
Central to Indonesia’s strategy is the completion of a national AI roadmap. This plan is being developed collaboratively with 39 ministries and agencies to create an inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem. The roadmap targets five priority sectors:
- Healthcare
- Digital talent development
- Bureaucratic reform
- Smart city infrastructure
- Food security
These sectors were selected to ensure AI technologies contribute directly to social equity, public welfare, and the country’s preparedness for future digital economy challenges.
Enhancing Ministry Coordination and Execution
Minister Hafid also underscored the need to improve internal coordination within her ministry. She called for systematic reporting, team cohesion, and faster feedback mechanisms to drive more effective implementation of government programmes. Collaborative leadership is key to building a responsive digital bureaucracy ready for future demands.
Building Digital Talent from the Ground Up
The ministry is investing in grassroots capacity-building, exemplified by outreach efforts at Yogyakarta Multi Media College (STMM). Represented by special staff member Alfreno Kautsar Ramadhan, the ministry encouraged students to engage actively with AI tools and concepts.
"By learning how to leverage AI, you will not be replaced. Instead, you will emerge as prominent actors in the era of technological disruption brought by AI," Ramadhan told the students. Minister Hafid envisions STMM evolving into a “polytechnic of digital affairs,” serving as a hub connecting academia, industry, and government.
Ambitious Talent Development Targets
Indonesia aims to develop nine million digital talents by 2030, positioning education as a driver of digital acceleration. To achieve this, the ministry has launched multiple talent development programmes, including a partnership with a global technology company investing US$1.7 billion in digital skills training. This initiative expects to prepare over 800,000 job-ready professionals, boosting the country’s readiness for AI-driven transformation.
These efforts also focus on democratizing access to advanced skills, particularly for youth in rural and underserved areas, ensuring inclusivity in the digital transition. Ramadhan emphasized that equity, creativity, long-term planning, and adaptability are critical for success in a changing digital environment.
Leadership and Shared Responsibility
Minister Hafid’s message is clear: proactive leadership and shared responsibility are essential. "Madam Minister wants you to play an active role rather than be mere spectators. She hopes you will emerge as innovators and leaders with the courage to take action," Ramadhan conveyed to the students.
As Indonesia advances its national AI agenda, effective institutional coordination and individual preparedness remain vital. The country’s approach—combining policy alignment, collaboration, and grassroots engagement—demonstrates its commitment to fostering an inclusive, technologically capable society ready to meet future challenges.
