LexisNexis Launches Protégé, a Legal AI Platform Built on Verified Content

LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced an expansion of Lexis+ that adds Protégé, a legal AI platform designed to help law firms and corporate legal departments complete complex work faster while reducing citation risk and maintaining confidentiality controls.

The platform addresses a specific gap in current legal AI tools. Many solutions generate text and summarize documents, but they often lack connection to authoritative legal sources, verification mechanisms, or the security controls that legal work requires. Protégé integrates LexisNexis's legal content library, Shepard's citation intelligence, and enterprise-grade security into a single system.

How Protégé Works

The core feature is Protégé Work, a workflow system that routes requests to specialized skills or generates a structured plan for complex tasks. Rather than producing a single AI response, the system presents lawyers with visibility into each step and control over execution before finalizing work product.

Available skills handle contract comparison, complaint analysis, research synthesis, due diligence, and compliance review. Teams can reuse workflows and apply firm standards consistently across matters.

Protégé Agentic Drafting creates contracts, motions, briefs, and deal documents grounded in firm templates, prior work, and matter materials. Drafts reflect organizational preferences and surface risk considerations before delivery to clients or courts.

Verification and Security Features

Shepard's Verify Trust Markers check citations in AI-generated content against authoritative legal sources and flag citations that cannot be verified. This helps lawyers confirm that cited authority exists before submitting work.

Protégé Vault allows teams to analyze documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, images, audio, and video in a single workspace. The system supports up to 100,000 documents per vault and links findings back to source material, including exact passages and timestamps.

Protégé Workrooms provides secure collaboration spaces with dual approvals, role-based permissions, and audit trails. Permission controls ensure documents and drafts are shared only as authorized.

For organizations handling sensitive data, Protégé BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) allows customers to manage their own encryption keys through AWS KMS, Azure Key Vault, Google Cloud KMS, or HashiCorp Vault. LexisNexis has deployed this feature in AmLaw 100 firms after testing.

Practical Outcomes

The stated benefits include faster research and drafting cycles, stronger first drafts, and more consistent application of firm standards. The system reduces citation and review risk while handling large matter files more effectively.

Work product outputs integrate with tools lawyers already use: Word for drafts, Excel for review tables, PowerPoint for client summaries, and PDF for final documents.

LexisNexis plans to roll out the platform globally throughout 2026 following its U.S. launch.
