Media Companies Report 100% AI Adoption as Digital Subscription Strategies Evolve
One hundred representatives from international media companies gathered in Berlin on May 20-21 for the thirteenth International Paid Content Summit, where discussions centered on subscription growth, AI deployment, and product development beyond traditional articles.
Every participating media company now uses AI in operations, according to an anonymous survey conducted at the summit. Customer service leads adoption at 75 percent, followed by customer retention at 73 percent and editorial content management systems at 72 percent.
Growth Expectations and Reader Willingness to Pay
Nearly half of respondents (49 percent) expect subscriber numbers to grow by up to 10 percent this year. Almost one-third (29 percent) anticipate growth between 10 and 20 percent.
On reader willingness to pay, 36 percent of international participants said it is increasing in their markets, while 24 percent disagreed. The remaining respondents were neutral or uncertain.
Product Innovation Beyond the Article
Summit discussions addressed how media companies develop digital news products beyond traditional articles. Dynamic paywalls, personalized newsletters, and AI-powered B2B offerings emerged as key growth drivers.
Claudius Senst, Chief Operating Officer of Axel Springer, emphasized that media companies must understand individual user preferences and integrate their offerings into daily routines. This requires understanding what content readers actually want and how to make products habitual.
