NHS England rolls out Microsoft Copilot to 505,000 staff to cut administrative time

NHS England will provide Microsoft 365 Copilot to 505,000 clinicians and support staff following a trial that found the AI assistant saved workers 43 minutes on administration daily. The rollout represents the largest implementation of its kind in healthcare.

The trial across 30,000 NHS workers in 90 organizations showed that 43 minutes per day equals roughly five weeks of recovered time annually per person. A full deployment could save millions of hours across the health service each year.

How NHS staff will use Copilot

Ward clerks will use Copilot for patient discharge processes, rota building, and bed management. Medical secretaries will draft meeting minutes and create templates. HR, finance, and procurement teams will access the tool for core administrative functions.

Managers will use Copilot to draft board papers and conduct organizational analysis. The tool creates, analyzes, and accelerates work across multiple departments.

Custom AI agents for NHS-specific challenges

NHS organizations will access Copilot Studio to build and deploy AI agents tailored to their needs. Central NHS teams can create agents for use across all trusts, while individual organizations can develop custom solutions.

Potential applications include reducing help desk burdens, speeding up freedom of information requests, and improving financial analysis. Agent 365 ensures all built agents meet security and policy requirements.

Rollout timeline and training

The deployment begins with a 12-month onboarding plan. NHS England aims to reach 200,000 users within the first six months. An extensive training program will ensure staff can fully use Copilot and AI agents.

Rob Thompson, Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer at NHS England, said the partnership would "free staff from admin so they can focus on treating patients." He described the potential to save clinical staff nearly a day's worth of administrative time every two weeks.

Health Innovation and Safety Minister Preet Kaur Gill said: "Every day, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals spend valuable time on administrative tasks that take them away from patients. By rolling out Microsoft Copilot across the NHS, we can reduce that burden."
