Nigerian Navy to Integrate AI for Enhanced Training and Security Operations

The Nigerian Navy is set to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to improve its training programs and internal security efforts nationwide. Rear Adm. Istifanus Albara, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), revealed this during his farewell parade at NAVTRAC Headquarters in Ebubu-Eleme, Rivers State.

Albara explained that AI will play a key role in boosting maritime security and expanding simulation capabilities within training. The initiative supports Nigeria’s broader economic and national security goals by strengthening both the professional training and retraining of naval officers and ratings.

Focus on Training and Simulation

“Technology now drives every aspect of security operations,” Albara said. “With AI, we are preparing our personnel for future warfare and internal security challenges by integrating advanced technology into our training programs.”

The Navy is revising its training curriculum and capacity-building strategies to incorporate these technologies effectively. Albara also acknowledged the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, for prioritizing infrastructure and reforms that support these efforts.

Achievements and Strategic Developments

Reflecting on his 16-month tenure, Albara highlighted several milestones, including:

  • Accreditation and curriculum upgrades of Navy professional institutions
  • Relocation of NAVTRAC headquarters from Apapa, Lagos, to Ebubu-Eleme
  • Enhancement of e-learning platforms and restoration of simulation tools such as the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) at NNS Quorra
  • Initiating accreditation with national bodies like the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)
  • Acquisition of new training sites in Makurdi (Benue State) and Ota (Ogun State) with support from local governments and traditional institutions

He urged the command to maintain momentum and complete ongoing projects to boost professionalism through realistic training, technology integration, and strategic partnerships.

Transition and Forward Outlook

The farewell parade concluded with the formal handover to Rear Adm. Robert Obeya. The event featured ceremonial parades, slow and quick march-pasts, and other naval manoeuvres, marking a significant moment for the Naval Training Command.
