OpenAI launches Daybreak to find code vulnerabilities before attackers do
OpenAI is releasing Daybreak, a security initiative that automatically detects and patches vulnerabilities in organizational code. The product arrives as OpenAI's answer to Anthropic's Claude Mythos, a security-focused AI model that Anthropic released privately in March.
Daybreak combines multiple OpenAI models, including GPT-5.5-Cyber and a specialized Codex Security agent. The system works by analyzing an organization's code to build a threat model, identifying potential attack paths, and automating detection of high-risk vulnerabilities.
How it works
The Codex Security agent, which launched in March, forms the foundation of Daybreak's approach. It creates threat models based on existing code, validates likely vulnerabilities, and flags the highest-risk ones for automated detection.
OpenAI says Daybreak "brings together the most capable OpenAI models, Codex, and our security partners." The company is also deploying GPT-5.5 with Trusted Access for Cyber, a specialized variant that began rolling out last week.
The competitive context
Anthropic announced Claude Mythos in April as a security model too dangerous to release publicly. The company shared it only through its Project Glasswing initiative, though unauthorized parties gained access to the model.
OpenAI has lacked a comparable security product until now. The company said it is working with industry and government partners while preparing to deploy additional cyber-capable models.
