Raila Odinga Calls for Government Investment in AI to Tackle Youth Unemployment

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has urged the government to prioritize training young people in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address job shortages and position Kenya competitively on the global stage. He emphasized that equipping youth with AI skills will increase their demand in the international job market.

“Artificial Intelligence is enabling wealth creation worldwide. If we can train our youth in AI, they will be highly sought after globally. This approach will help us catch up with countries ahead of us,” Raila stated at the graduation ceremony of over 200 students from the Siaya Community Digital Hub.

Learning from Global Success Stories

Raila highlighted how Kenya and South Korea started on similar economic footing in 1963. Today, South Korea’s economy is forty times larger, largely because of its focus on youth development and infrastructure that attracts investors.

He noted Africa’s demographic reality: 75% of its population is under 35. This presents a critical choice. “If youth receive the right skills and knowledge, they become motivated contributors to development. Without these, they risk becoming a social burden,” he warned.

Drawing inspiration from India and China, Raila urged Kenya to invest in human capital and infrastructure. He cited China’s success in lifting 500 million people from poverty to the middle class within 50 years as a model for Africa’s potential.

Energy Solutions to Support Growth

On the energy front, Raila proposed adopting nuclear power to solve Kenya’s energy shortages. He explained that a nuclear plant capable of producing 5 megawatts would stabilize the power grid, lower production costs, and attract investors.

“When I was Energy Minister, I proposed nuclear power, but some misunderstood it as nuclear weapons. There is peaceful use of nuclear energy that can benefit Kenya,” he explained.

Supporting Local Talent and Job Creation

The graduation ceremony also featured Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, founder of the digital hub, who revealed plans to employ some graduates in the hub’s Business Outsourcing Center, targeting both local and international job opportunities.

The event was attended by Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode and several Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

Why This Matters for Government Officials

  • Strategic investment in AI training addresses youth unemployment and boosts economic competitiveness.
  • Infrastructure development attracts investors and drives sustainable growth.
  • Energy solutions like nuclear power can resolve power shortages and reduce operational costs for businesses.

Government agencies can support programs that provide AI education and develop infrastructure to foster innovation and job creation. For those interested in AI training resources, platforms like Complete AI Training offer courses that can help build these critical skills.
