Salesforce buys AI customer service firm Fin for $3.6 billion to boost automated workflows

Salesforce has agreed to acquire Fin, the AI-powered customer support platform formerly known as Intercom, in a cash-and-stock deal valued at roughly $3.6 billion. The acquisition puts advanced conversational AI directly into the hands of the company's enterprise clients, signaling an intensifying battle to automate customer service workflows at scale.

Salesforce plans to fold Fin's technology and engineering team into Agentforce, its platform for building autonomous digital workers. Fin's agents already resolve complex user issues without human intervention across live chat, WhatsApp, SMS, Slack, and voice calls. The deal is expected to close during the fourth quarter of Salesforce's 2027 fiscal year, which falls in early calendar 2027.

What Fin brings to Agentforce

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff framed the acquisition as a way to inject proven, market-ready automation into the company's product lineup immediately. "Fin brings proven agent technology, a deep commitment to customer success, and an incredible AI team that will complement Agentforce with powerful service agent capabilities," Benioff said. "Together, we'll help companies of every size seize this opportunity - accelerating time to value with trusted agents that deliver measurable outcomes at scale."

For customer support teams, the integration means access to AI for Customer Support tools that operate across multiple channels without requiring a rip-and-replace of existing infrastructure. Fin's platform handles the full resolution cycle, not just ticket triage or suggested replies. That distinction matters for support leaders measuring deflection rates and time-to-resolution.

Leadership and product continuity

Fin co-founder and CEO Eoghan McCabe said he will stay on to lead the company, and co-founder Des Traynor will continue overseeing research and development. In a public post on X, McCabe told customers that daily operations would not be disrupted and that Salesforce's backing would accelerate the rollout of upcoming products, including Fin's native language model, Apex, and its automated operational assistant, Operator.

Keeping the founding team in place reduces integration risk. Support leaders who rely on Fin's roadmap can expect continued development rather than a forced migration. The structure mirrors other Salesforce acquisitions where acquired CEOs retained autonomy while gaining access to enterprise distribution.

Why this matters for customer support professionals

The acquisition consolidates two major platforms that support teams already evaluate separately. If you use Salesforce Service Cloud, Fin's capabilities will likely appear as native Agentforce features rather than a third-party integration. That could shorten procurement cycles and reduce the number of vendors in your stack.

For specialists building careers around AI-driven support, the deal also signals where the market is heading. AI for User Support Specialists is no longer a niche skill - it is becoming the default architecture for high-volume service operations. Professionals who understand how to configure, monitor, and improve autonomous agents will have a structural advantage as these tools become standard inside the dominant CRM platform.
