SPAR’s Regions’ Treasures Program: Supporting Small Producers with Market Access and Marketing

SPAR Hungary’s Regions’ Treasures program has significantly expanded the presence of high-quality, domestic products from small producers, artisan companies, and smaller wineries and breweries. Now featuring over 550 products from 125 suppliers nationwide, the program supports small businesses that collectively employ around 800 people.

Small producers often face challenges entering large retail markets due to limited production capacities. The Regions’ Treasures initiative addresses this by enabling local suppliers to deliver their artisanal products directly to SPAR stores within regional proximity. This approach shortens supply chains and reduces environmental impact, while emphasizing the personal commitment of producers to their products.

Diverse Product Range and Regional Focus

The program offers a wide variety of products from 23 different categories, including dairy, meat, pasta, eggs, preserves, pickles, snacks, oils, sauces, honey, jams, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Customers can easily identify participating products by the distinctive “red apple” logo in SPAR hypermarkets and supermarkets.

Some of the top-selling items include chicken eggs, dairy products, vermicelli, homemade pork crackling, and Dubai chocolate ice cream. The program not only boosts local economies but also provides consumers with access to authentic, regional flavors.

Positive Feedback and Educational Support

Customer feedback highlights the excellent quality and taste of the artisanal products. Small producers appreciate the exposure and sales opportunities the program offers. Additionally, educational programs provided by SPAR help suppliers improve their business skills and marketing capabilities.

In 2024, SPAR organized the Marketing Bootcamp event for Regions’ Treasures suppliers, featuring 30 expert presentations covering business strategy, marketing, social media, branding, finance, and logistics. This training helps suppliers refine their approach and better connect with consumers.

AI Applications Enhancing Supplier Communication and Shelf Impact

One of the innovative tools introduced during the training was SPAR’s AI-based communication application, which assists suppliers in optimizing their messaging. In collaboration with the University of Pécs, suppliers also gained insights into consumer perception through eye-tracking studies, revealing how their products attract attention on store shelves.

These initiatives demonstrate how AI can support marketing efforts for small producers, improving product visibility and customer engagement. Marketing professionals interested in leveraging AI for communication and consumer analysis may find related resources and courses at Complete AI Training.

Looking Ahead

SPAR plans to continue expanding the Regions’ Treasures program through 2025 by adding new partners and enhancing the logistics system. The program will also increase the visibility of these local products in stores, making it easier for consumers to discover and choose authentic regional goods.

For marketers, the Regions’ Treasures program offers a clear example of how focused support, combined with marketing education and AI tools, can help small producers gain traction in competitive retail environments.
