Starmer’s AI Adviser Steps Down After Six Months
Matt Clifford, who advised the government on artificial intelligence strategy, is stepping down from his role for family reasons. He has served as the prime minister’s AI opportunities adviser since January 2025 and played a key part in developing the UK’s AI action plan.
Despite stepping back at the end of July, Clifford maintains a positive relationship with Downing Street and may return to support the government on AI matters in the future.
Contributions to the UK’s AI Strategy
Clifford led the review and implementation of the AI opportunities action plan, which Sir Keir Starmer fully endorsed by accepting all 50 recommendations. His work focused on policies to grow the UK’s AI sector, increase AI adoption, and attract AI talent and entrepreneurs to the country.
He also played a role in establishing the AI Safety Institute advisory board and was involved in organising the 2023 AI Safety Summit during the previous Conservative government.
