Study projects artificial intelligence healthcare market to reach $1 trillion by 2034

The global AI healthcare market will reach $1 trillion by 2034, growing 45.3% annually. However, public opposition delayed $156 billion in data center projects.

The global market for artificial intelligence in healthcare is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2034, up from $39.5 billion in 2025, representing a compound annual growth rate of 45.3%, according to a study by The Insight Partners. The rapid expansion signals AI's deepening role in both clinical and administrative functions, even as public opposition to data center infrastructure raises questions about future deployment.

North America is expected to account for more than 42.92% of global market share by 2034, with Europe holding a 26.83% share. The United Kingdom's AI healthcare market is projected to grow at a 44.3% CAGR over the same period.

AI's expanding role in medicine

"When we talk about the application of AI, we can think of applying it across the entire spectrum of health care specialties, from the administrative side through to clinical care," said Harvard Medical School Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia Samir Kendale. From administrative streamlining to clinical decision support, AI for Healthcare is already reducing burdens on staff and improving diagnostic accuracy. Analysts have pointed to AI's potential in cancer care, including boosting detection methods, analyzing medical data, and assisting specialists with diagnoses.

AI can streamline routine tasks, boost operational efficiency, advance diagnoses, and speed up the discovery of new medical treatments, according to a Harvard Medical School analysis published in August 2024.

Public pushback on data center projects

Community opposition halted or delayed 48 AI data center projects valued at $156 billion in 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported in May. A Gallup poll from the same month found that 7 in 10 Americans opposed building new AI data centers in their local communities, including 48% who were strongly opposed. Just 7% of respondents said they were strongly in favor.

The tension highlights a practical hurdle for healthcare AI growth, since data centers provide the computing backbone for many advanced AI tools.

Why this matters for healthcare professionals

For healthcare professionals, the projected growth means AI tools will increasingly handle routine tasks and support clinical decisions. Knowing where AI can cut administrative load and sharpen diagnostics will be important for those leading implementation. At the same time, local resistance to data centers could slow the infrastructure buildout these systems depend on, making it worth tracking both the technology's progress and the public conversation around it.
