UAE Hosts Global Summit on Satellite-Based Rescue Operations

The UAE is hosting the 39th International COSPAS-SARSAT Programme Meeting in Abu Dhabi from May 27 to June 5, 2025. This event gathers over 200 experts from 45 countries to focus on satellite-based search and rescue operations. Organized by the National Guard’s National Search and Rescue Center (NSRC), the summit highlights the UAE’s role in advancing global rescue efforts.

What is COSPAS-SARSAT?

COSPAS-SARSAT is an international initiative that coordinates satellite systems to detect and relay distress signals. Since 1982, it has contributed to saving more than 66,000 lives worldwide by ensuring fast alert transmissions to rescue authorities. The program works closely with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), both United Nations agencies.

UAE’s Role in Global Search and Rescue

Joining COSPAS-SARSAT in 2009, the UAE has steadily enhanced its search and rescue capabilities. Hosting this meeting underscores the country’s commitment to international collaboration and excellence in emergency response operations.

Advanced Rescue Operations in the UAE

The NSRC operates nine advanced ground stations that receive and process distress alerts, coordinating rapid responses across the UAE. From 2024 to the first quarter of 2025, the center conducted over 1,200 rescue missions, including land, sea, airborne medical evacuations, and emergency signal responses. These missions have saved numerous lives domestically and internationally.

24/7 Coordination and Rapid Response

The NSRC runs a fully integrated coordination hub around the clock. It manages a fleet of AW139 helicopters equipped with night vision and thermal imaging, stationed strategically across five zones to ensure quick emergency responses. The center also continuously monitors maritime and terrestrial distress frequencies to detect incidents promptly.

Integrating AI and Technology for Faster Rescue

The NSRC is incorporating advanced tools like the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and AI-driven platforms to analyze distress signals in real time. These technologies help reduce response times and improve the precision of locating emergencies. This approach supports the UAE’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which promotes efficiency and optimal use of resources in government operations.

Commitment to Saving Lives Worldwide

By hosting this international meeting, the UAE highlights its leadership in humanitarian rescue operations and its dedication to fostering global cooperation and innovation in emergency management. The event reinforces the country’s active role in enhancing global safety and resilience.
