UK Joins Global Network to Ensure Safe Use of AI in Healthcare

The UK has taken a significant step by joining an international network of health regulators dedicated to the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is now a founding ‘pioneer’ member of the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network. This alliance enables the UK to collaborate with other regulators worldwide to share early safety warnings, monitor AI tools in real-world settings, and develop international standards.

Collaboration for Safer AI in Healthcare

Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed enthusiasm about the UK’s role in the network, highlighting the country's commitment to responsible AI innovation. He noted that as the UK rolls out its 10-year health plan, integrating advanced technology will be key to improving patient care and boosting NHS efficiency. Working with global partners ensures that AI’s potential is used safely and ethically across healthcare systems.

The UK is the first of ten countries to join the network in the coming months. This diverse group shares the goal of making AI in healthcare safer and more effective for patients worldwide. A signing ceremony was held on 24 June 2025 at Westminster, featuring Lord Patrick Vallance, Science Minister; Lawrence Tallon, MHRA Chief Executive; and Dr Ricardo Baptista Leite, HealthAI Chief Executive.

A Global Approach with UK Leadership

Dr Ricardo Baptista Leite emphasized the importance of this collaboration, praising the UK’s longstanding leadership at the intersection of AI and health. He stated that the UK’s involvement will strengthen the network and accelerate progress toward AI-powered health systems that improve quality of life globally.

MHRA’s Role and Innovation

The MHRA brings valuable experience to the network, including its AI Airlock initiative. AI Airlock is a regulatory sandbox allowing companies to test AI medical devices with the regulator before wider NHS deployment. Recently, the MHRA secured £1 million in funding to expand access to this testing environment.

Lawrence Tallon highlighted the promise of AI to speed up diagnoses, reduce NHS waiting times, and save lives—but stressed that trust in AI’s safety and effectiveness is essential. MHRA is leading efforts to ensure AI technologies, including generative AI, are used responsibly in healthcare. Updated guidance and reforms to medical device regulations reflect this commitment.
