UK Government to Appoint First Chief AI Officer to Drive Digital Transformation
The UK government will appoint its first Chief AI Officer to lead AI integration in public services. This role marks a key step in advancing AI strategy within government.

UK Government to Appoint its First Chief AI Officer
The UK civil service is set to hire a government chief AI officer (CAIO) for the first time, marking a significant step in integrating artificial intelligence leadership within public administration. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) confirmed the role will soon be advertised, with details like scope, responsibilities, and salary currently undergoing approval.
The CAIO will be the highest-ranking AI professional within the UK public sector and will join the Government Digital Service team at DSIT. Alongside this, the government is reportedly seeking a new chief data officer to replace Craig Suckling, though further information has yet to be released.
Embedding AI in Government Services
This appointment aligns with the UK government’s recent efforts to place AI at the center of public service transformation. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Keir Starmer introduced an AI Opportunities Action Plan aimed at integrating AI throughout government operations.
Following this, the government published an AI playbook developed with input from 20 departments and public sector bodies, supported by industry and academic experts. Additionally, £42 million from a £3.25 billion transformation fund will be invested in three DSIT-led 'Frontier AI Exemplars' projects, designed to enhance government efficiency.
Other investments include £8 million allocated for AI technology in the Ministry of Justice to reduce administrative burdens on probation officers. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has also created a directorate focused on scaling AI in local government, collaborating with the government's AI Incubator to develop planning decision tools for councils.
Global Examples of Government AI Leadership
The UK joins a growing list of countries appointing senior AI officials to oversee AI strategy in government.
- United States: The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) appointed Lisa Einstein as its first chief artificial intelligence officer in August 2024. This move was part of an effort to responsibly incorporate AI into cybersecurity. Although leadership changes have occurred, federal agencies continue to name chief AI officers.
- France: In October 2024, Clara Chappaz was named France’s first AI minister. This role reflects a national commitment to advancing AI within public policy. President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized AI as a critical factor for economic growth and aims to position Paris as a global AI hub.
- United Arab Emirates: Omar bin Sultan Al Olama has served as Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence since 2017, focusing on improving government performance through AI investments across sectors.
