UK Government and Tech Giants Unite to Train 7.5 Million Workers in AI by 2030

The UK Government has launched a significant initiative to equip 7.5 million workers with artificial intelligence skills by 2030. Announced during London Tech Week, this effort targets preparing one-fifth of the UK workforce for a future where AI is integral across all sectors.

Collaboration Between Government and Industry

Led by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, this partnership includes major technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM, BT, Salesforce, and Sage. The goal is to deliver accessible, high-quality AI training nationwide. On June 13, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle chaired the first meeting to discuss identifying skill gaps, developing practical training programs, and setting up regular progress reviews.

Peter Kyle emphasized: “Artificial Intelligence is the new economic frontier, and we want to get Brits ready for jobs of the future so we can spark the growth powering our Plan for Change.” He highlighted the need to ensure that individuals of all ages and regions have the necessary skills to work with and alongside AI technology.

Meeting the Rising Demand for AI Skills

Projections show that 10 million UK workers will be using AI tools in their daily roles by 2035. Upskilling is key to maintaining the UK’s competitiveness and productivity. This initiative is part of the broader “Plan for Change,” a strategy focused on unlocking economic opportunities and supporting high-paying jobs through technology.

The program targets both specialist AI skills and general AI literacy to ensure workers at every level can effectively engage with AI tools.

Large-Scale Training Delivery

Each company in the partnership contributes in line with its expertise:

• Microsoft aims to upskill one million UK workers by the end of this year.
• Amazon offers resources through its AWS Educate and Skill Builder platforms.
• IBM provides targeted modules via its SkillsBuild program.
• Sage, Salesforce, and SAS focus on training for small business owners, apprentices, and older workers, ensuring inclusive access.

In the past year, the UK attracted over £44 billion in AI-related investment, creating more than 13,000 jobs since the AI Opportunities Action Plan launched in January. Officials and tech leaders agree that sustained workforce training is essential to maintain growth and secure the UK’s leadership in AI.

By equipping workers with AI skills and confidence, the program supports productivity and innovation across sectors such as finance, retail, healthcare, and education.
