Unikie Launches AI Lab to Drive Practical AI Integration in Product Development

Unikie, a technology and innovation company based in Tampere, Finland, has established a new AI Lab focused on accelerating artificial intelligence adoption for its customers and deepening AI integration within its own products and business operations. The lab will be led by CTO Niko Haatainen, supported by an investment from Peter Sarlin, founder and CEO of Silo AI.

"Applying AI in our own development has given us concrete insight into its real impact," says Niko Haatainen. "This hands-on experience enables us to assist our customers with practical, actionable AI solutions rather than just theoretical advice."

Building on a Proven AI Track Record

Unikie has extensive experience in AI, working with Europe's largest automotive companies and developing smart devices, including drones and mobile phones. The AI team, led by Haatainen, is part of an international technology organization of about 600 people. They have delivered numerous AI projects in areas like autonomous driving, drone technology, and manufacturing. Their expertise covers machine vision, language models, traditional machine learning, and deep neural networks.

The company serves clients across various sectors such as network and communications, automotive, transport and logistics, manufacturing, and retail, including several Fortune 500 companies.

An example of AI's deep integration into Unikie's products is the Unikie Marshalling Solution. This autonomous driving product automates logistics in car factories, ports, and logistics compounds by managing the transfer of vehicles from factories to dealerships.

Beyond products, AI is embedded throughout Unikie's software development lifecycle—from coding and testing to HR processes—leveraging language models and AI-based tools to improve efficiency and quality.

Peter Sarlin notes, "Unikie’s solid experience in complex industrial AI projects and its own AI-centric product positions it well to become a leading European AI operator."

Expanding AI Capabilities to Support Customers

Unikie plans to grow its AI team to 100 specialists within the next year to enhance its ability to deliver AI-driven business value to customers.

CEO Juha Ala-Laurila states, "Our investment in practical AI applications will generate significant benefits for our clients. Having Peter Sarlin as an advisor strengthens our AI Lab's development."

The AI Lab’s focus areas include:

  • Device-centric AI applications such as autonomous vehicles, computer vision, drone technology, and industrial automation.
  • Real-time quality assurance and process control using AI to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
  • Internal AI tools that speed up software development and improve work quality.

Sarlin adds, "The true value of AI lies in its integration into products and processes. Unikie is positioned to make significant advances and become one of Europe’s leading AI players."
