Unikie launches UnikieMind platform to accelerate embedded software development
Unikie, a Finnish technology company, introduced UnikieMind, an AI platform designed to speed up embedded software development. The platform combines large language models with methods Unikie developed across hundreds of customer projects.
The move addresses a real constraint: roughly 28 million software developers exist worldwide, but only a fraction specialize in embedded systems-the code that runs in vehicles, machines, and devices where decisions happen locally and can't wait for cloud processing.
The embedded developer shortage
"Physical AI is the biggest transformation I can see now," said Juha Ala-Laurila, CEO of Unikie. "However, there are not enough skilled embedded developers in the world to build efficiently Physical AI solutions for everyone who needs them."
Unikie has spent over a decade working with automotive manufacturers and building autonomous driving and drone systems. The company applied AI development tools to its own R&D work and saw measurable results across the full development cycle-from code generation and quality improvements to process efficiency and new capabilities.
What UnikieMind does
UnikieMind works across the entire embedded software lifecycle: requirements gathering, code generation, testing, optimization, and maintenance. The platform is built on current commercial language models customized with Unikie's domain knowledge.
UnikieMind Catalyst, a separate offering, provides a methodology and hands-on support from Unikie's engineers. Teams use it to identify high-value automation opportunities, build quick proofs of concept, and measure where AI tools can cut development time and improve code quality.
The business case
Seppo Kolari, Unikie's founder and general manager for the US, said the company positions itself as an advisor on AI adoption, not just a tool vendor. "Our mission is to help customers with their physical AI solutions and act as trusted advisors on their AI journey," Kolari said.
For product development teams, the practical value comes down to productivity. Unikie's approach pairs AI tools with embedded specialists who know where automation adds the most value-and where human judgment still matters, especially in safety-critical code.
Teams looking to adopt AI in their development process might explore AI Coding Courses or Generative Code Courses to build internal capability alongside external tools.
