Windows 11 Notepad Introduces AI Text Generation and Enhanced Writing Tools
Windows 11 Notepad adds an AI-powered "Write" feature for quick text generation using custom prompts. Available to Windows Insiders, it helps speed up writing and overcome writer’s block.

Windows 11 Notepad Introduces AI-Powered Text Writing
Microsoft is rolling out a new AI-powered text generation feature for Windows 11 Notepad. This tool, called "Write," is currently available for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels who have updated to Notepad version 11.2504.46.0. It allows writers to create content quickly by providing custom prompts directly within the app.
To use the Write feature, place your cursor where you want new text or select existing content to build upon. Then right-click and choose Write, select it from the Copilot menu, or press Ctrl + Q. Enter your instructions in the dialog box and click Send. The AI-generated text will appear right in your document.
You can keep the generated text by clicking the Keep text button or discard it if it doesn't meet your needs. Additional prompts can be added to refine the output. Note that using this feature requires signing in with a Microsoft personal account. The AI service uses credits tied to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Copilot Pro subscriptions.
How This Benefits Writers
- Speeds up the drafting process by generating text snippets based on prompts.
- Helps overcome writer’s block by offering fresh ideas or phrasing.
- Allows quick expansion or rewriting of existing content without leaving Notepad.
This new capability complements earlier AI tools added to Notepad, such as the Rewrite feature introduced in November 2024. Rewrite automatically rephrases sentences, adjusts length, and modifies tone using generative AI. Other helpful updates include a built-in character counter and spell-check/autocorrect functions, improving the overall writing experience.
Customizing Your Notepad Experience
If you prefer to keep Notepad simple, the AI options can be disabled in the app settings. Alternatively, uninstall the app to use the classic Windows Notepad executable (notepad.exe
) without AI features.
Additional AI Features in Windows 11 Tools
Alongside Notepad, Microsoft is enhancing other Windows 11 apps with AI. Paint users in the Insider program can now generate custom stickers and isolate image elements using AI-assisted tools. The latest update to Snipping Tool adds automatic screenshot resizing and a color picker that identifies HEX, RGB, or HSL color codes from any pixel on the screen.
These updates reflect Microsoft's ongoing effort to integrate practical AI tools into everyday Windows applications, offering writers and creatives new ways to work faster and smarter.
