Wordsmith Launches Training Framework for ‘Legal AI Engineers’

Legal tech startup Wordsmith has introduced a new training framework aimed at creating skilled ‘legal AI engineers’. The program consists of several modules supported by online educational resources and is offered free of charge. It specifically targets in-house lawyers, who form the core customer base of the company.

The course is structured to guide learners from level 0 to level 4 across different parts of the program within approximately two months. It is designed so that general counsels (GCs) can integrate it into their existing competency frameworks to train their teams effectively.

A Practical Framework for Legal AI Skills

Ross McNairn, CEO of Wordsmith, explained the need for the program: “The legal profession is scrambling to figure out AI, but there’s no structured way for lawyers to develop these skills. We’re seeing a new type of legal professional emerge – those who really understand AI systems, not just use the tools.”

The training framework includes three distinct tracks:

• Operational
• Technical
• Leadership

Each track takes lawyers from complete beginners to industry experts. The program features clear actions and measurable outcomes at every level, making it straightforward for participants to track their progress.

Wordsmith’s initiative also aims to establish community standards around AI use in legal practice. Instead of individual lawyers figuring things out independently, the framework provides a shared roadmap for the profession.

Wordsmith’s training launch follows a $25 million funding round, underscoring the company’s commitment to AI education in law. Educating users on the relevance and practical applications of AI tools increases adoption and effectiveness.

Similar efforts have been made by other companies; for example, iManage introduced an ‘AI University’ some years ago. These programs serve dual purposes: they act as marketing channels and help customers build skills to maximize the value of AI technology.
