Workday's Banerjee says consolidating federal data into single platform strengthens AI security and efficiency

Federal agencies can cut compliance tasks from days to minutes using agentic AI, a Workday exec says-but accuracy must come before speed. Consolidated data systems also shrink security risks by reducing entry points for attackers.

Workday executive outlines how federal agencies can secure AI systems while speeding operations

Ashok Banerjee, Vice President of Workday Government Engineering, said federal agencies need generative AI and large language models that deliver high accuracy for compliance-critical tasks. He emphasized that agentic AI-systems that can execute tasks autonomously-can reduce work that typically takes days to minutes, particularly in job descriptions, skills assessments, and performance management.

The speed gains matter less than the accuracy requirements in government work. Federal agencies cannot afford errors in compliance documentation or personnel decisions, Banerjee said.

Data consolidation as a security strategy

Banerjee stressed that federal IT security improves when agencies consolidate data into a single system rather than spreading information across multiple platforms. Workday's approach includes built-in security controls and role-based access restrictions that limit who can view or modify specific information.

Fragmented data systems create multiple entry points for attackers. A consolidated platform reduces the attack surface by design.

Agentic AI for federal workforce functions

Federal agencies are applying AI for operations across hiring, skills management, and employee evaluation. Agentic AI can automatically generate accurate job descriptions aligned with federal standards, assess worker skills against role requirements, and flag performance issues that need human review.

The technology works best when paired with human oversight. Agencies retain final decision-making authority while AI handles the high-volume, repetitive analysis that previously consumed significant staff time.
