AI agent for legislative assistants

Bill Tracking and Status Change Agent

An accurate daily status sheet with alerts on changes that matter to the member

Bill Tracking and Status Change Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Offices track bills the member sponsors, cosponsors or cares about, and during session the status changes come fast. This agent checks the legislature's bill tracking site each weekday morning for every bill on the watch list. It records new actions, amendments and hearing dates, and compares new bill text with the last saved version. If the status data and the text disagree, it checks the official journal or calendar and refetches before reporting anything. It then rates each change against the member's stated positions. A new stage, a hearing within 7 days or a text change that touches a position triggers an alert draft. The assistant decides who receives each alert. Edge case: when a bill is gutted and amended with new subject matter, it is flagged as a new bill that needs a fresh position review.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

How it decides

A change is alert-worthy when it moves a bill to a new stage, sets a hearing within 7 days, or changes text in sections linked to the member's position.

  • New stage, hearing within 7 days, or position-relevant text change triggers an alert
  • Gut-and-amend bills are flagged for a new position
  • Only official legislature sources count

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Watch list and member positions
  • Alert window for hearings (default 7 days)
  • Time of daily run
  • Who receives the daily sheet

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Assistant approves alerts before they go to the member

Hard limits

  • Never contacts other offices or lobbyists
  • Uses only official legislative sources for status

It stops when

  • Done: every watched bill checked and logged
  • Stop: the legislature site is down; report which bills were not checked

An example run

What happensOn Mar 4, 7 of 64 watched bills changed overnight. HB 2210 showed 'passed committee,' but the text still matched the introduced version, so the agreement check failed. The agent pulled the committee report, found an adopted amendment capping fees at $50, and refetched the amended text. Because the member supported no cap, it drafted an alert. The legislative assistant approved sending it to the member and the policy director.
