AI agent for law students
Mock Trial Cross-Examination Practice Agent
Help the student practice tight, leading cross-examination until the question form is consistent.
What it does
Learning cross-examination takes practice against a witness who answers like a real one: evasive, literal, sometimes hostile. Classmates are busy and often too kind. This agent builds a witness from the case facts the student provides, and answers the student's questions only with what that witness would know. It checks each question for leading form and for objections an opposing lawyer might raise, such as compound questions or assuming facts not in evidence. It scores each round and adjusts how hard the witness is. If the student keeps asking open questions, the agent points that out and replays the point. The student decides when to stop. Edge case: if the student relies on a fact not in the case file, the witness answers that they do not know.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Student chooses a case and a witness
- Read the case facts and the witness statement
- Set the witness behavior and difficulty
- Receive the student's question
- Answer only from what the witness would know
- Is the question leading, single fact and free of likely objections? If not: Name the problem and ask the student to rephrase it. Back to step 4.
- Record the score for the round
- Did the student score above the target for three rounds? If not: Keep the difficulty or add an easier warm-up round. Back to step 4.
- Raise witness difficulty and continue
- Session scorecard and notes
How it decides
Scores each question on leading form, single fact and relevance, and raises witness difficulty after three rounds above 80%.
- Open questions during cross are marked as errors
- Compound or assuming-facts questions draw a mock objection
- Witness never volunteers facts outside the file
- Raise difficulty after three rounds above 80%
