AI agent for human resources specialists
Pay Equity Check Agent
Pay changes that do not widen unexplained gaps and stay within budget
What it does
Raises and offers can open pay gaps that nobody notices until later. For each proposed adjustment, this agent compares the person's pay to peers with a similar level, role and tenure. It flags gaps beyond your threshold and tests whether the proposed change would widen or narrow them. If a change makes things worse, it proposes alternatives such as a different amount or timing. It then reruns the comparison with the alternative to confirm the gap closes without breaking budget. The HR partner and finance approve final changes. Edge case: a peer group has only two people, so the agent says the sample is too small and widens the group.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Pay adjustments are proposed
- Pull pay data for each person and their peer group
- Compute each person's gap to the peer median
- Does each peer group have enough people to compare? If not: widen the group by level or location and recompute. Back to step 2.
- Flag gaps beyond the threshold and test the effect of the proposed change
- Propose alternatives where the change widens a gap
- Do the alternatives narrow the gap and stay within budget? If not: adjust amounts or timing and recheck both. Back to step 6.
- HR partner and finance approve the final changesThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Pay equity report and approved adjustment list
How it decides
A gap is flagged when pay differs from the peer median by more than the threshold for similar level, role and tenure, unless a documented reason exists.
- Flag any gap above the set threshold (default 5%)
- Require a peer group of at least five people
- Accept a gap only with a documented reason such as a certified skill
- Prefer alternatives that close the gap within the cycle budget
