AI agent for tutors

Reading Comprehension Evidence Agent

Learners back their answers with evidence from the text.

Reading Comprehension Evidence Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Adult literacy learners often answer reading questions from opinion or memory rather than the text. Telling them 'wrong' does not teach them to look back at the passage. This agent spots the specific part of an answer that the passage does not support. It retrieves the relevant lines and asks a targeted follow-up question that points the learner back to them. It then checks whether the new answer is supported by the text. If the learner is still confused after two tries, it switches to a simpler excerpt and asks again. A corrected answer moves the learner on to transfer practice with a new passage. The tutor receives a session record and decides on further support. Edge case: an answer that is reasonable and supported by a different line is accepted.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

Read the steps as a list
  1. Learner submits an answer
  2. Identify unsupported interpretations
  3. Retrieve the relevant passage lines
  4. Ask a targeted follow-up question
  5. Is the new answer supported by the text?If not: use a simpler excerpt and ask again. Back to step 4.
  6. Move to transfer practice
  7. Evidence-based practice session record for the tutor

How it decides

It chooses a follow-up that targets the specific unsupported inference; it simplifies the excerpt after two failed follow-ups.

  • Follow-up target: the specific unsupported claim in the answer.
  • Simplify: switch to a shorter excerpt after two unsupported answers.
  • Accept: any answer supported by the passage, even if not the expected line.
  • Move on: to transfer practice after one correct supported answer.

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Number of tries before simplifying (default 2)
  • Reading level of excerpts (default one level below the passage)
  • Session length (default 20 minutes)
  • Tone of follow-up questions (default encouraging and short)
  • What the tutor receives (default session record with each answer and the lines used)

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Formal grading or diagnosis

Hard limits

  • No formal assessment.

It stops when

  • Done: supported answers in two items.

An example run

What happensIn a session on April 2 learner Maria Lopes says 'I'll wait' was spoken by the father. The text-support check fails. The agent shows the two lines with speaker names and asks who said 'I'll wait'. Maria still answers wrongly, so the agent uses a shorter excerpt with only those two lines. She answers correctly and moves to transfer practice. Tutor Paul Greer reviews the record.
