Language Conversation Repair Agent

Learners use the target language skill correctly in conversation.

Language Conversation Repair Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Language learners repeat mistakes in practice conversations because feedback is general rather than aimed at the skill they are missing. This agent runs a short dialogue on the learner's own goal, such as ordering food or booking travel. It checks the learner's sentences against an approved grammar and vocabulary reference to find real errors, not style differences. It then asks a follow-up that tests the same skill again in a new sentence. If the learner uses it correctly, the agent reduces help and moves to the next skill. If not, it adds simpler context and asks again. A record goes to the teacher. Edge case: when a sentence could be right in a different meaning, the agent asks what the learner meant before marking an error.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

Read the steps as a list
  1. Practice session starts
  2. Run a short dialogue task on the goal
  3. Check errors against the approved reference
  4. Ask a follow-up that tests the same skill
  5. Did the learner use it correctly? If not: add simpler context and try again. Back to step 4.
  6. Reduce scaffolding and move to the next skill
  7. Adaptive practice record

How it decides

It chooses the next prompt from the learner's actual response and adjusts scaffolding up or down.

  • Next prompt: chosen from the learner's actual response and the skill being practiced.
  • More or less help: reduce help after correct self-correction, add simpler context after a miss.
  • Real error: only when the approved reference marks it wrong for the learner's intended meaning.
  • Move on: after two correct uses of the skill in a row.

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Learner goals and scenarios (default travel, work, daily life)
  • Reference used for checking (default the course's approved grammar guide)
  • Correct uses needed before moving on (default 2)
  • Session length (default 10 minutes)
  • Language of explanations (default learner's first language for beginners)

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Formal proficiency certification

Hard limits

  • No certification.

It stops when

  • Done: skill used correctly twice.

An example run

What happensOn June 3 learner Kenta Mori practices travel plans in English and says 'I went to Rome next week'. The agent asks when he travels; he means next week, so it is a real error. A follow-up about his hotel still uses past tense, so the check fails. The agent adds a simple model sentence and asks again. Kenta answers correctly twice, and the agent moves on.
