D&D 5e Rules MCP server
Build D&D 5e characters and run turn-based battles with your AI as your rules referee.
This is a helper for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. It lets your AI build characters, level them up, and run fights step by step using the official SRD rules. It is handy if you play D&D and want a quick way to handle the bookkeeping without flipping through rulebooks.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to a D&D 5e rules engine, so it can look up rules, create characters, and run battles for you when you ask. You just talk to your AI like you would to a friend at the table.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to do something D&D related, like make a fighter or start a fight. The AI uses this helper to work through the rules step by step. The helper asks for the choices it needs, like which class or what you rolled. You answer, and it keeps going until you have a character or a resolved battle.
What you can do with it
- Create a D&D 5e character from scratch
- Level up a character and pick a subclass
- Start a turn-based battle with monsters
- Track hit points, actions, and conditions during a fight
- Use class abilities like Second Wind or Action Surge
- Look up spells and how they work
- Keep a character sheet that remembers your stats
Try asking your AI
- “Make me a level 1 human fighter with the soldier background.”
- “Start a battle between my fighter and a goblin warrior.”
- “I attack the goblin. I rolled a 17 to hit.”
- “What can my character do this turn?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, like a list of choices, a character sheet, or a battle update. When you attack, it tells you if you hit and how much damage you dealt. It also tells you what you can do next. Everything stays in the conversation so you can keep playing.
Before you start
What you need
- The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers
- Node.js installed on your computer (the free software that runs the helper)
- A D&D 5e SRD character idea or a battle you want to run
Good to know
This is a rules engine, not a full game. It does not roll dice for you, so you still need to provide your rolls and table facts. It also only includes SRD content, so some official D&D books are not covered.
Install it with your AI
Add D&D 5e Rules MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
