Magic: The Gathering MCP server
by gregario
Ask your AI about Magic cards, rules, prices, combos and decks, and get real answers.

This is a helper for your AI that knows Magic: The Gathering. It lets you ask normal questions about cards, rules, prices, combos and deck ideas, and get answers based on real card data instead of guesses. It is handy if you play Magic, build decks, or just want to settle a rules argument at the table.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you from what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to Magic: The Gathering card data, rules and combo information. Once it is set up, your AI can look things up and do small jobs for you when you ask, like checking a card or analyzing a deck.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a Magic question in plain words, like what a card does or whether it is legal in a format. Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper looks things up in card data, rules and combo databases it keeps on your machine, so it can answer quickly. Then your AI writes the answer back to you in the chat, in normal sentences. On the first run it downloads the card and rules data, and keeps it updated after that.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search for cards by name, color, type, set, rarity or keyword
- Look up a card's full text, rulings and format legality
- Check prices for one card or a whole list of cards
- Analyze a deck list for mana curve, colors and legality
- Look up official rules by number or by text
- Find known infinite combos for Commander
- Get staple cards and popular archetypes for a format
Try asking your AI
- “What does Sol Ring do and is it legal in Commander?”
- “Find me green creatures with Cascade under 4 mana.”
- “Here is my deck list, can you check the mana curve and legality?”
- “Are there any known infinite combos with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers written in the chat, like a card's text, a list of matching cards, prices in dollars or euros, or a short deck summary with a mana curve and color breakdown. Rules lookups come back as the official rule text. Combo searches come back as the steps, what you need, and what the combo does.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js installed on your computer (the free program that runs this helper)
- The Claude desktop app or Claude Code, or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- An internet connection for the first run, so it can download card and rules data
Good to know
It only reads card, rules and combo data, so it does not change anything for you, but prices and card data come from outside sources and can be out of date or slightly off.
