BoardGameGeek MCP server
by kkjdaniel
Look up board games, check friends' collections, compare prices, and find rule answers right inside your AI chat.

This connects your AI assistant to BoardGameGeek, the big online home for board gamers. Once it is hooked up, you can just ask your AI about games, collections, prices, and even tricky rules instead of clicking around the website yourself. It is handy if you play a lot of tabletop games or shop for them often.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only talk and answer from what it already knows. An MCP server is a little helper program running quietly behind the scenes that gives your AI a brand-new ability. Here, that helper plugs into BoardGameGeek, so when you ask something about board games, your AI sends the request through this helper to BGG and brings the facts straight back to you. You never touch the plumbing yourself; you just keep chatting normally.
What this MCP server does
When you type a question like "show me the top-rated games" or "find cheap copies of Wingspan", your AI passes it along to this helper. The helper then asks BoardGameGeek for matching records, filters out whatever you didn't care about, and hands the results back. For prices, it also checks several shops through BoardGamePrices and picks out good deals. Then your AI turns everything into a tidy reply in the same conversation window.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search for base games or expansions by title
- Pull up full details and average ratings for any game
- Browse someone else's public collection with filters like player count or score
- See today's hottest games according to BGG
- Check live retailer prices for one or several titles
- Spot trades where each person owns something the other wants
- Ask simple rules questions answered from BGG forum threads
Try asking your AI
- “What's the BGG rating for Gloomhaven?”
- “Show me the current hotness list”
- “Which games in my collection haven't been played yet?”
- “Best UK price for Wingspan please”
What it gives back to you
Mostly you get neat lists and short written answers pasted right into the chat. Ask about a single game and you receive its stats plus a summary paragraph. Price questions come back as figures per storefront next to the product names. Some actions return long blocks of text copied from BGG discussion boards rather than cleaned-up notes.
Before you start
What you need
- A BoardGameGeek login (free)
- A BGG API key requested from their applications page, treated like a secret code
- Optionally your BGG username typed into settings so phrases like "my collection" resolve correctly
- If going the manual route, the Go programming toolkit downloaded onto your computer
