AI for Science Master's Programme 2026-2027: Advanced Training in Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Discovery at AIMS South Africa

AIMS South Africa is accepting applications for the 2026-2027 AI for Science Master's Programme, a fully residential one-year degree that blends advanced coursework with a structured research project. The focus is simple: use machine learning, deep learning, and mathematical methods to push scientific discovery forward.

This programme targets exceptional students from across Africa with strong mathematical foundations and a clear interest in AI and computational science. If you're driven to ask hard questions in physics, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, or related fields-and answer them with data and models-this was built for you.

What sets this programme apart

AIMS trains researchers to use AI as more than a toolkit. You'll learn how to frame scientific problems so that algorithms amplify insight, guide experiments, and reveal patterns that standard methods miss.

The outcome: graduates who can think like scientists and build like engineers-ready to contribute in labs, observatories, field stations, or high-performance computing clusters.

Programme structure

This is a one-year taught master's with integrated research. You'll complete core modules delivered by international and African experts, then apply those skills in a supervised project tied to real scientific questions.

  • Machine Learning and Deep Learning
  • Computational Modelling
  • Scientific Data Analysis
  • Mathematical Foundations of AI

Your research project is not an academic exercise. It's an opportunity to generate new results with direct relevance to your field.

Who should apply

  • Strong background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a closely related discipline
  • Proven interest in AI, machine learning, or computational modelling
  • Curiosity about natural systems and how to explain them with data and theory
  • Commitment to advancing Africa's scientific capacity through research and innovation

The ideal candidate looks at galaxies, molecules, climate, or cells and asks, "What would a precise model say?" If you see AI as a catalyst for better science, you'll fit right in.

Scholarships and cohort

Only 40 students will be selected for the 2026-2027 cohort. Every admitted student receives a full Google DeepMind scholarship covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and all programme-related costs.

This support exists to remove financial barriers and accelerate research talent across the continent. Learn more about the organisation behind the scholarship at Google DeepMind.

Application timeline

Applications open in two stages. The first round begins on 8 December 2025 and closes at 11:59 PM SAST on 6 March 2026. Early submission is wise given the small cohort and high demand.

Why AIMS South Africa

AIMS South Africa is part of the AIMS Network, a pan-African initiative building a strong pipeline of scientific and technological leaders. The AI for Science Master's Programme strengthens the continent's research ecosystem while positioning graduates for doctoral studies and research roles in academia, industry, and innovation hubs across Africa and beyond.

How to make a strong application

  • Show mathematical maturity and evidence of programming or computational work.
  • State clear research interests that connect AI methods to a concrete scientific problem.
  • Line up references who can speak to your analytical ability, initiative, and research potential.
  • Highlight any prior projects, datasets, or publications-even small ones-with your specific contribution.

Apply through official channels

Submit applications and direct questions through the official AIMS channels only. Third parties cannot process applications.
