500MW Data Center Proposed in Lapland, Finland

A large-scale data center with a capacity of 500MW is planned for construction near Rovaniemi, the regional capital of Lapland in northern Finland. The project is being developed by FCDC Corp and is situated approximately 10 kilometers outside the city.

The proposed site covers an area of around 180,000 square meters (1.93 million square feet). Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the facility becoming operational by 2029. The target location is at Hietavaara, along the eastern banks of the Kemijoki River, close to the Valajaskoski power plant. The city council has recently agreed to purchase the land and lease it to FCDC for this development.

FCDC’s Broader Development Plans Across Finland

FCDC is actively working on several data center projects throughout Finland. The company currently has about eight projects in various locations, including Mikkeli, Kerava, and Lahti. One notable partnership involves Verne, which is set to develop a 70MW data center in Mäntsälä. Verne confirmed collaboration with FCDC and is awaiting building permits before beginning construction.

In Lahti, a city about 100 kilometers north of Helsinki and the capital of the Päijät-Häme region, FCDC purchased a 10-hectare plot for €6 million ($6.77 million). Plans for this site include a 100MW data center facility. The land was acquired from Spatium, the company managing city premises in Lahti.

Company Background

FCDC was founded approximately 18 months ago, initially known as Fincap DC Corp. The Finnish real estate investment firm Fincap retains around a 25% stake in FCDC after selling its majority shareholding. This move reflects ongoing interest and investment in expanding Finland’s data center infrastructure.

  • Location of the Lapland project: Hietavaara, near Kemijoki River and Valajaskoski power plant
  • Site area: 180,000 sqm (1.93 million sq ft)
  • Construction timeline: Start in 2027, operational by 2029
  • Other FCDC projects: Mikkeli, Kerava, Lahti, Mäntsälä (in collaboration with Verne)
  • Lahti project: 10-hectare plot, €6 million purchase, 100MW planned capacity

These developments indicate a growing focus on data center infrastructure in Finland, leveraging locations with access to renewable energy sources and existing power plants. For professionals involved in real estate and construction, these projects highlight significant opportunities in land acquisition, development planning, and infrastructure investment.
